The Desert Classic 2024

The Clubs at Dove Mountain

Jan 1 - Jan 1, 1970

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR 2024. Please reach out to Halie Stevenson for more details.

The Clubs at Dove Mountain

The Clubs of Dove Mountain are made up of The Gallery Golf Club and The Golf Club at Dove Mountain and sit within the beautiful Dove Mountain community, surrounded by the Tortolita Mountains. With legendary designers like Jack Nicklaus, John Fought, and Tom Lehman – and a litany of honors, accolades, and high-profile professional events – the 63 holes of golf at The Gallery and Golf Club at Dove Mountain are truly second to none when it comes to total golf experiences in the Desert Southwest.

GOLF

The Desert Classic will test your skills on both the Gallery Golf Club and the Golf Club at Dove Mountain. Two tournament rounds and one practice round will give you 54 holes to experience the greatness of these two clubs.  And, contestants will be some of the first to battle it out on the newly re-opened Saguaro nine after a year-long renovation!

EXPLORE

Our new date for 2024 should get us out of the cold weather and snow storms of previous years and into some glorious spring sunshine. Additionally, we will incorporate some Kentucky Derby-themed details into the competition and wrap things up on Saturday with a Derby watch party and awards event.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT & RULES

  • 36 holes of tournament play
  • Four-person teams; teams may be compromised of any combination of male and female players. And yes, all-male or all-female teams are just fine. Guests are also welcomed and encouraged, but every team must have at least one member.
  • The format for the entire event will be a shamble – each player will tee off from their respective tee box. Players will then select the best tee ball of the four, where each player will then play their own ball through the completion of the hole ; One stipulation – each player must have THREE of his or her drives selected during the round!
  • Scoring during the two rounds of tournament play will be calculated by using TWO NET best balls for the group (all golf balls must be holed for a score to count)
  • GHIN handicaps or unofficial handicaps approved by Jeff Goodsell and the golf staff will be used for scoring purposes (each contestant will receive 80% of their handicap according to USGA calculation for the format of the tournament)
  • To be eligible for competition, each team must submit a TEAM NAME with their entry. If you so choose, team uniforms are also encouraged. There may be a prize for the most creative team name/uniform at the awards ceremony following play on Saturday – keep in mind the Kentucky Derby themed element of the event!
  • Members may sign up as singles, twosomes, threesomes, or as a full team. Any entries not part of a full team will be teamed up to the best of our ability – while we can almost 100% guarantee a good time, we shall not be held accountable for non-winning performance

  • CLUB LIMIT – 14 club rule is in effect
  • MUSIC – Music-playing devices are allowed (perhaps encouraged?)
  • OUT OF BOUNDS- Defined by inside points, at ground level, of white stakes, fence posts, and walls
  • RED PENALTY AREAS – Red stakes or lines define Red Penalty Areas
  • YELLOW PENALTY AREAS- Yellow stakes or lines define Yellow Penalty Areas
  • GROUND UNDER REPAIR – White lines define Ground Under Repair
  • DESERT AREAS – Balls played into the desert and NOT found shall be subject to the rules for a lost ball and NOT a lateral penalty
  • SODDED AREAS – Except in a penalty area, if the ball lies in or touches a sod seam or the sod seam interferes with the area of the intended swing, the player may, without penalty, lift the ball and clean it. The player must drop the ball as near as possible to its original position, which is not nearer the hole, avoids interference by the sod seam, and is not in a hazard or on the putting green
  • EMBEDDED BALL IN THE GENERAL AREA – Relief from an embedded ball governed by Rule 16.3 is in effect
  • PACE OF PLAY – Groups are expected to maintain an average pace of play of 15 minutes per hole. If your score is not going to be used as one of the best scores on a given hole, please pick up and do not finish the hole
  • TEES – All men’s play will be from the Yellow Tee markers.  All women’s play will be from the Green tee markers
  • TIES – Ties will be broken by the USGA recommended method of matching the scorecards from the most recent round. The Committee will compare the last nine holes if still tied; compare the last six holes, the last three holes, and finally the 18th hole. If the teams in question are still tied after going through this procedure, the tie will be broken using the first-round score
  • RAIN – In the event of rain, the Committee may declare play null and void and cancel all scores for the round in question. A minimum of 18 holes will constitute a Tournament. If the superintendent pulls carts from the golf course, every effort will be made to complete the round. Players should be prepared to walk and carry their own bag if necessary in order to complete the round
  • HANDICAPS – The Committee reserves the right to set and adjust the handicaps of all Tournament participants for the purposes of Tournament Awards. All decisions of the Committee shall be final for the purposes of the Tournament
